Grape Treading in the Douro at Quinta da Roêda
Seasonal experience: grape treading only takes place during the harvest, from mid-September to October, depending on the ripeness and availability of the grapes. It is not available at any other time of year.
In mid-September, the region bursts into the age-old bustle of the harvest. In the traditional method of making Port, grapes are trodden by foot in granite tanks known as lagares.
At this time of year, subject to availability, you can share in the spirit of work that has been repeated every year for generations. Step into the lagares and experience one of the most genuine and important moments in the making of Port.
When does it take place?
Dates change every year, as nature decides when the grapes are ready. If you’re planning to visit us in September, keep an eye out: when dates become available, we’ll announce them on this page and on our Instagram. You’ll also be able to book here.
Good to know
- Harvest season only: from mid-September to October, depending on the grapes. Dates are announced here and on Instagram.
- Pay in advance: unlike our tours, grape treading is paid for at the time of booking, as it is prepared in advance.
- Groups: we welcome groups of up to 40.
- What to wear: comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting stained.
