Classic Vintage 1991

Choose the year:

Croft has remained true to its distinctive Vintage Port style, characterised by a powerful, ripe fruitiness and a round luscious palate. Croft Vintages develop great aromatic complexity with age and a soft velvety texture.

Tasting Notes: Vibrant ruby colour turning to brick on the rim. Intense, rich, jammy damson and strawberry fruit aromas. Good depth and complexity on the nose, with additional notes of spice and leather. Finely structured palate with great balance. Strong jammy, chocolate flavours – hint of eucalyptus. Lovely length on the finish. Drink now.

viticultural year and harvest

The Winter of 1990/1 was generally dry until early January, when there was heavy rain until March. April was also wet and flowering took place in May, in warm dry weather.

The summer was hot and dry and the flower set was excellent, resulting in a lot of fruit on the vines. Warm days and cool nights ensured long fermentations with excellent colour extraction. Sugar levels were above normal and, indeed, continued to rise during the course of the vintage. Rain fell on the 29th September but, due to dryness of the soil, it did not enter the root system and there was no colour dilution. Picking resumed on the 30th under textbook conditions.

"Even better than I remember from prior tastings. The best Croft since the 1966 and easily one of the best of the vintage. This shows terrific cassis and black fruit aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, thick and medium-sweet"

"Still dark and nearly opaque the ’91 is looking and tasting quite youthful. The nose is equally fresh with floral and red fruit aromas and liquorice. The palate is perfumed and spicy with tea grapes prunes and minty warm chocolate cherry flavours through-out. There is a roundness of tannins at this point but there is still some grip on the mid-palate. No rush to drink this one before 2020"
