Quinta da Roêda is the cornerstone of Croft’s reputation as a producer of superb Vintage Ports. Its characteristically plump, full, vigorously fruity wines, with their hallmark
aroma of Gumcistus, the aromatic bush, are the quintessence of the inimitable Croft house style.
Tasting Notes: Deep ruby-red core surrounded by a narrow brick coloured rim. The nose displays a wonderful warmth and maturity, with a dense core of molasses and sweet scents of ripe black cherry, prune, sultana and dried fig. As it opens up in the glass, the wine reveals intricate dimensions of aroma, with a subtle resiny hint of eucaplyptus and evocative notes of cigar box, rose petal and freshly baked bread.
On the palate, the first impression is of dense, velvety texture and generous, mellow flavour, lifted on the mid-palate by a lively acidity and beautifully integrated, polished tannins. The opulent flavours of dark chocolate, maraschino and plum pudding linger into the impressively long finish. This seductive Vintage Port is a wonderfully mature expression of the character of the historic Quinta da Roêda estate, perfectly ready to drink now.
viticultural year and harvest
The 2001-2002 Viticultural year was one of the driest years on record. During the winter almost no rain fell. Besides the dry winter, the temperature was extremely cold, with the Pinhão river completely freezing over at Christmas.
Just when we were waiting for the last ripening of the grapes to occur in early September, between the 15th and 22nd, we received 70mm (4.3 Inches) of rain across the Douro. If it had not been for the perfect health of the grapes this season, the effect would have been much more damaging.
The vintage started on the 23rd September, and clear hot weather resulted in very good Ports being made during the two weeks until the rains returned at the beginning of October.
